Remote Sensors - Special 6th. TwinGeo edition

The sixth edition of Twingeo Magazine is here, with the central theme "Remote Sensors: a discipline that seeks to position itself in the modeling of urban and rural reality". Exposing the applications of the data obtained through remote sensors, as well as all the initiatives, tools or news that are directly related to the capture, pre and post processing of spatial information. In recent years, the use of sensors to obtain information has increased rapidly, helping us to see reality from another perspective.

Beyond knowing that there are technologies aimed at observing the earth, it is understanding the importance of using these for a better understanding and development of the environment. The launch of new satellites such as the SAOCOM 1B Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), intended for the analysis, monitoring and development of the productive sector, as well as the management of all types of environmental emergencies, makes us believe in the power of geospatial data.

Argentina is advancing by leaps and bounds with space technology, according to statements from CONAE, this mission was very complex and represented a challenge that leveled them with the most important Space Agencies in the world.

This edition, as always, added many efforts to carry it out, especially due to the limited time of the interviewees. However, the interviews, conducted by Laura García - Geographer and Geomatics Specialist, were focused on companies that are seeking to show the world the utilities and benefits of the inclusion of remote sensing data in decision making.

Milena Orlandini, Co-Founder of Tinkerers Fab Lab, stressed that the company's objectives are based on "changing how spatial data is used, visualized and analyzed, combining it with disruptive technologies such as GNSS, AI, IoT, Computer vision, Augmented Mixed virtual reality and Holograms." The first time we had contact with Tinkerers Lab was at the BB Construmat, which was held in Barcelona Spain, it was incredibly interesting how they carried out the idea of building a digital model of the earth's surface and integrated it with remote sensor data to show spatial dynamics.

"Digital social innovation is in the DNA of Tinkerers, we are not only a team passionate about science, technology and entrepreneurship, but about dissemination"

In the case of IMARA.EARTH, we spoke with its founder Elise Van Tilborg, who told us about the beginnings of IMARA.EARTH, and how they won the Planet Challenge at Copernicus Masters 2020. This Dutch startup is destined to carry out environmental impact analysis framed in the Sustainable Development Goals .

“All the information was geolocated and connected to remote sensing data. This combination gave rise to a very rich and dense monitoring and evaluation framework.”

With Edgar Díaz General Manager of esri venezuela, the questions were focused on the use of their solutions. At the beginning of the pandemic, Esri tools brought great benefits to society, and for all analysts who wanted to geolocate what was happening in the world. Likewise, Díaz commented which according to his point of view would be the essential geotechnologies to achieve a digital transformation in cities.

“I am convinced that the future data will be open and easily accessible. This will help in data enrichment, updating and collaboration between people. Artificial intelligence is going to help a lot to simplify these processes, the future of spatial data will be very impressive without a doubt”.

Also, as usual, we bring news related to remote sensing tools:

  • AUTODESK completes acquisition of Spacemaker
  • Successful launch of SAOCOM 1B
  • Topcon Positioning and Sixence Mapping join forces to digitize works in Africa
  • Copernicus climate Bulletin: Global Temperatures
  • USGS Sets Precedent in Earth Observation with Landsat Collection 2 Dataset
  • Esri acquires Zibumi to enhance 3D visualization capabilities

In addition, we present a brief review about Unfolded Studio the new Geospatial data management platform that was developed by Sina Kashuk, Ib Green, Shan He and Isaac Brodsky a team that previously worked for Uber, and they decided to create this platform to solve the problems of processing, analysis, manipulation and transmission of data that the geospatial analyst usually has.

The founders of Unfolded have been developing geospatial technologies for more than half a decade and have now joined forces to reinvent geospatial analytics.

The section "Entrepreneurship Stories" was added to this edition, where the protagonist was Javier Gabás from geopois.com. Geofumadas had the first contact with Geopois.com, in a small interview where the objectives and plans of this platform were broken down, which grows more and more every day.

Javier, from the approach of entrepreneurship, tells us how the Geopois.com idea started, what led them to carry out the undertaking, circumstances or difficulties that arose and the characteristics that made them successful in such a large community.

We closed the year with an exponential growth in terms of the number of visits, more than 50 specialized tutorials on geospatial technologies, a thriving LinkedIn community with nearly 3000 followers and more than 300 geospatial developers registered in our platform from 15 countries, including Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Poland or Venezuela
