Posify, low-cost GPS centimetric accuracy

Recently this product was presented at the ESRI User Conference in Spain, just last week and this next will be in the TopCart in Madrid.

Precision gpsIt is a GPS positioning and measurement system that supports post-processing, with which centimeter precision can be obtained. Nothing that other systems do not do, but what has caught our attention is the price.

How works

Basically the device works as a logger. A magnetic external antenna is attached to it and captures raw distance measurements to satellites in files that are then downloaded via USB to the computer. It supports data from points, routes and polygons, for the latter it calculates areas.

It has the size of an iPod, very light, such that it can be carried in a pocket or even placed with Velcro in the cap that comes included, so you can easily perform moving measurements with hands free.

The difference of this, with a traditional logger, like the one used by the traced vehicles (black box), is that they record the raw measures with which they can later be post-processed.

Similarly, browser-type GPS only captures positions, with accuracy between 3 and 5 meters but that can not be improved.

The data that is downloaded to the computer is the files that contain raw measurements of distance to the satellites (pseudorange and carrier phase), apart from the standard NMEA messages. Even without post-processing, the accuracy of NMEA is better than that of a standard navigator-type GPS, since the external antenna significantly reduces measurement noise.

What details can be obtained

Additionally, Posify offers a post-processing service, since the captured information is sent and returned already processed in differential mode with respect to the nearest GPS reference stations.

The precisions that can be reached are:

  • 20 to 30 centimeters for moving measurements
  • 2 to 3 centimeters for static measurements

The vertical precision is from 2 to 3 times the horizontal precision.

The data comes in kml and shapefile formats. Additionally, the information related to the post-processing, in the case of the points of one kml, each one saves information such as its latitude, longitude in degrees / minutes / seconds and decimal formats. Also ellipsoidal and orthometric altitude, UTM coordinate, number of visible satellites and estimated precision after post-processing.

PosifyHow much is Posify?

Posify costs 326 Euros, plus taxes, in total about 395 Euros. This includes:

  • The Posify logger. This comes with a 4GB micro SD card, which can store up to 1,300 hours of uncompressed recording.
The internal lithium battery supports up to 12 hours of use and is charged at 4 hours ..
The GPS obtains data in L1 frequency up to 50 channels, with binary UBX / NMEA code and format every second.
  • An external magnetic antenna with 1.50 meter cable, SMA connection.
  • A metal base plate for the antenna, with 10 cm. diameter.
  • One USB / micro-USB cable
  • An “Army” cap with velcro to carry the antenna and additional velcro

It does not include the USB charger, because for that you can use a charger any of which we sure have several left over for each mobile device we have bought.

For the post-process you pay 99 Euros per year. The first year is free, as it is included with the purchase of the equipment.

That is not Posify

GPS smartphoneIt is understandable that the device is a data receiver. It does not have a screen to go browsing as it is done with conventional equipment. Although considering that now any mobile has a built-in GPS, the possibilities are interesting.

As an example it can be used to transfer information in real time to a Smartphone.

Apart from recording measurement files on the internal disk, the Posify logger provides real-time information about the satellites through the USB port. This information (data) includes the code and phase measurements, as well as the NMEA messages from the GPS standard solution. USB data (measurements and NMEA messages) are generated at the same rate as file recording (every second). USB data is generated permanently regardless of whether the logger is recording a measurement session or not. That is, as soon as the logger is turned on the USB port generates output constantly.

This has several possible applications, connecting the logger to a laptop or a mobile terminal (PDA, smartphone):

  • Visualization of the status of the GPS constellation on the screen (from NMEA messages)
  • Recording measurements continuously in a computer (reference station)
  • Real-time positioning (Real Time Kinematics or RTK)

Figure shows the display of GPS satellites in real time on a smartphone. The application gives information about the number of satellites in view, their azimuth and elevation, and the strength of their signal. It is also interesting to look at the DOP (Dilution Of Precision), which is a value that indicates the geometry of the GPS constellation: the lower the DOP, the more favorable the geometry of the satellites is for positioning accuracy.

Where is it available?

Currently only for Spain. It works with about 180 GPS reference stations spread throughout much of mainland Spain. The network includes the stations of the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and those of most of the Autonomous Communities

Posify works directly in the official Spanish system ETRS89, in several formats of latitude / longitude. In height, the ellipsoidal value (ellipsoid GRS80) and the orthometric or sea level value (EGM08-REDNAP official geoid)

It seems to me an interesting product, which we will have to follow because surely we will know more about them.

  18. I hope that in the previous answer we have answered the question. The attached. Concerning to acquire from all the countries, the truth we have to look at it carefully because they are dozens of customs and we do not want that the delivery of the equipment are stopped by a process. We will get help from Geofumadas for this detail.

At the moment it is only available in Spain. But, given the number of requests from Argentina to Mexico, we have been working these weeks in the study of the new version of Posify. Posify 2.0 will cover all that territory. You will have two configurations:

Posify 2.0 stand-alone: with the same operation you can give solutions with a sub-metric error that we estimate in 50 cm. You will lose immediacy because the solutions will not be available until one day later.

Posify 2.0 base plus logger: In this case you will need a PC connected to the Internet to which a Positive 2.0 logger will be connected. Once calibrated and released that reference base in our system, an additional Posify can be used to take measurements with the usual error. This complete system is more expensive but allows much higher precisions.

We are also studying ad-hoc projects for deployments in any country.

We estimate that both configurations will be available early in 2013 and possibly in January.

We hope that we will meet all the needs that have been expressed in these comments.

  19. I hope we have answered in the previous comment. Postprocessing is necessary and costly but the end user will be less laborious than doing it on their own. We are still light years from other manufacturers in terms of costs.

  20. I hope that with the previous answer we have answered your interest. We will have sub-metric precisions in almost all the continent although to arrive at the precisions that we obtain in Spain will be necessary the complete configuration.

  23. Please I need to know where to buy and also if it serves me to make rural catstros

  24. Because of the importance of the team, I just want to be told when it will be on sale in my country, Venezuela?

  25. I look interesting this innovative equipment that will be very useful, due to its low cost and the most important that is centimetric, should be distributed in countries like mine Nicaragua, which would be very useful for the people who are dedicated to make surveys topographic and also very useful for municipal cadastres.

  26. It sounds interesting and they believe that in Mexico this type of device will be extended as well as technical support and ……… .. what happens if in Spain they have the mobilemapper 100 that also with an additional cost has post-processing they believe that Posify will make it a lot of shadow in First of all for the economic price and for the post-process I say it because in Mexico if this happens many companies like Ashtech will have to do something to gain minimal ground, give away the post-process code as well as the field software….

  27. The creators of Posify have said that for now the product is only available to Spain. But with the amount of reactions from Latin America they will surely be thinking of something bigger.

  28. Honestly and honestly I did not understand the answer

  29. Iper interesting will be that paraguay has the environment to be used in our country, and if so, there is the posobolidad of conducting the acquisition via interne.
    I hope to publish answer.

  30. With that price vrs. Those characteristics hopefully and soon have necessary developments I add to the opinion LA is a potential market, conduct a quick survey and you will see

  31. This instrument is very important, it is of great help for surveyors, who daily have the need to use gps for surveys in areas that are very difficult to access with the stations, I thank you for more information, the way to acquire the equipment without more than add one more friend says goodbye …… greetings. arvice. j .suarez. 33. As we answer to Caesar to this day we have made the necessary developments for Spain. We have plans to expand to other countries like Dominican Republic or Bolivia.

We can in any case make a development that we could not depend on the availability of bases. Send me an email and we can study the project if the measurements that are going to be done are many.

  35. I would like to know what is the price of posify gps thanks

  36. It is interesting the proposal of Posify, since in Colombia there are many rural properties that require topographic measurements a little more precise than those offered by a Garmin navigator from 2 to 3 meters and that are physically impossible to measure with a Total Station or a Theodolite . The guild of Topographers of Colombia would be very grateful if you had this technology in our country.

  37. It is clear that also throws utm cordadas and I would like to know if the elevation is also presisa
But anyway I would like to buy it in Peru as Aria or asta when I would expect the equipment interests me

  39. The posify seems very good when it will be approximately in Colombia and that you can work with it. thanks for the info

  40. Thanks for the clarification Javier.
To the extent that they have progress of their plans, notice it in the blog or in the account of Twitter that they have so I think that the Latin American market is very attractive although it will have to see the peculiarities that are different with Spain, like the little availability of bases and Little institutional integration.

  41. Hello Juan Carlos.
That depends on the country where you are and what you are occupying. In Latin America, the use of Topcon and Sokkia has become widespread.
There are some Chinese manufacturing equipment that are coming in, which are cheaper but in practice the experiences I have seen are not very satisfying by the support and training.

My advice is to think about options: Leica, Topcon, Sokkia, Geomax or Spectra. Preferably the most used in your country because you will find it easier to find a course, or technicians already trained.
With a quotation you have you can go to the competition and ask them to offer you an equivalent equipment.

If you tell us the country in which you are we can give you the contact with a representative who will take care of you.

  42. Cease,

To this day we have made the necessary developments for Spain. We have plans to expand to other countries like Dominican Republic or Bolivia. The device can be purchased on the website in Spain.

Send me an email and we can study to prioritize Peru with respect to other countries.

  43. I need to buy a total station, which I recommend, economical and good

  44. Interesting, just what we need for jobs in the Road of Communication (Roads) and other related. In Peru, large-scale surveying works are being developed on a large scale and we require this type of instruments to improve our service. I would like to thank you in advance for your attention and I would like to ask you how to acquire equipment of this nature in our country, specifically Lima-Peru.

    Cordially,
