Contouring with Google Earth - Contouringge or AutoCAD

A few days ago I asked a friend how to do to see the contours in Google Earth using an application called ContouringGE 1.1 that is supposed to work with any version 4x, Windows XP or Vista.

And finally I could though the experience was painful, so I write what was my achievement to see others reach it ...

1. Download ContouringGE

image To start, you have to Download a file compressed from a “hateful” page where the creator has a popup window with an advertisement in German that covers the entire page, so to remove that “double chin” you just select SchlieBen which means close and it doesn't bother you anymore.

Ojo, which can only be accessed at this page (http://www.sww.wg.am/) in the first days of the month, since it has limited bandwidth, and after that bandwidth runs out and is not available.

2. Install the ocx

Once the file is downloaded, it is decompressed and five files appear:

  • A kml called contour.kml I have no idea what it's for
  • Two ocx files that are ActiveX controllers
  • A dll file that loads a submenu in the Google Earth framework
  • An executable file of ContouringGE

The two ocx files are placed in

C: / WINDOWS / system32 /

Then to register the ocx you enter the command menu, which looks like DOS with "start / run / cmd" and there you write the text:

regsvr32% Systemroot% ~ \ System32 \ comdlg32.ocx

And enter, a message should appear that the control was installed correctly, the same is done with the other:

regsvr32% Systemroot% \ System32 \ MSCOMCTL.OCX

If you have trouble finding the counterplate, it is usually on the button to the left of the number 1 and using the Alt Gr key. It is also at Alt + 92.

Finally if you do not want to break your head, you copy to the lines that are above, and then on the black screen you right click and paste.

If you have Windows Vista it should be “Start / Accessories / Run as administrator”

I have placed the GGEFramework.dll file in “C:Archivos de programaGoogleGoogle Earth”, there also the executable triangle and the kml file.

3 Run ContouringGE in Google Earth

Then to make it hard, I created a shortcut of the triangle on the desktop.

Now Google Earth is running. And once deployed, the triangulation is executed.

4. What must happen

Then in the Google Earth a new command appears in the upper bar called GGE, which contains the options to create contours and configure their appearance or labeling.

Another way to do it is from AutoCAD, using a plugin.

Step 1. Display the area where we want to obtain the Google Earth digital model.

Step 2. Import the digital model.

Using AutoCAD, having the Plex.Earth Add-ins installed. In principle, you have to start the session.

Then we select in the Terrain tab, the option «By GE View», it will ask us to confirm that 1,304 points will be imported; then it will ask us to confirm if we want the contour lines to be created. And ready; Google Earth contour lines in AutoCAD.

Step 3. Export to Google Earth

Having selected the object, we choose the KML Export option, then we indicate that the model is adjusted to the terrain and finally that it opens in Google Earth.

And right there we have the result.

    EYE first you must have installed the google earth ok, you also know very well that when installing a folder is generated in the C drive.
    Now all the files you have downloaded from countouringGE copy it to that google eath folder that is on drive C.
    Then click on the icon triangle type that is one of those countoringGE files and enjoy.

The truth is that the tool is quite useful when we do not have contour coverage; however, it must be taken into account that the densification of the curves only corresponds to their interpolation; I get the impression that some relief model. I did the exercise and even equidistance at 50 meters works more or less well, after that we don't “win” anything. Ahh!!!!!!, the version was updated and so many steps are not necessary.

  77. The truth is that the installation process is quite complicated so that in the end its operation is not safe ...
    I don't remember if you ever mentioned it on the blog but there is a very useful application by Valery Horosunov (Valery35 in the Google Earth Community), with which - among many things, contours can be generated. As far as they are concerned, the application has the ability to control the number of levels to represent, their colors, their gradient and their smoothing.
    This application is called KML2KML, its URL is:

    The most economical version costs $ 50.- dollars. I am not sure of the features of the 3 versions available.
    Other things they offer are:
    - Extract terrain data and be able to generate its contours, points, grids.
    - Import shp, gpx, nmea, txt and log files
    - Open a KML and generate regions automatically
    – Generate “tiles” from Google Maps base images.
    - Locate photos (such as position marks or image overlays using their GeoExif.
    - Assemble and sort KML from multiple KML
    - Apply mathematical functions in the generation of surface plots.

    In short, it is very good to save time and get more juice from GE.
