Bentley Map XM vrs. Geographics V8
In a previous post I mentioned a first impression of what Bentley Map is, now I would like to analyze the similarities so that users who knew Geographics lose their fear.
If I were Bentley Systems, I would seek to group geospatial applications, since it seems that although the tools are still very robust, that habit of being directed to the "user who knows us" instead of "the user who does GIS" continues. Although we know that Bentley maintains its policy of reaching BentleyMap to its Engineering users with whom it is well positioned… it will cost it to grow with respect to its strong competitors in Geospatial. For now, some app location changes have been appropriate, but I insist, they continue to scatter the wicked.
To analyze the similarities we are going to group the Bentley Map applications into four roles, and as we write we will put the hyperlinks:

The advantage I have is time, from what you have told me, the solution is clear to us. To create and edit "GISes", we already have the best drawing tool and we have a good command of it, Microstation (with support Geographics, for topologies, etc). I believe that the ease presented by ArcGIS will be the point of the needle to fill in data and the subsequent exploitation of the GIS. At least initially. And in the long run we will go to a use of Bentley Map (although with time the new version of Microstation may arrive...) especially for the Geoengineering approach (hydraulics and combination with InRoads), but it will take time to create all that mesh.

Hello, I particularly have a level of satisfaction with Bentley Map, that shows when I have spoken of its benefits, however I must be honest in this and I have been while I talked about their weaknesses.
Much is to understand the type of user of Bentley, Geographics was a tool with geospatial approach for engineering users who also want to do GIS, it means that they are taking advantage of the design of linear works, hydraulics, Project Wise, structures, architecture and everything what Bentley does and what ArcGIS does not do. That's why Geoengineering is called the line. ESRI is purer GIS, with extensions or customized applications to different branches of cartography (and other areas), but always with a GIS approach; his strength lies in analysis and printing, in that Bentley does not surpass him.
So you will have to write the difference of where you are going, will you do integration with engineering applications, or will you just use the Microstation drawing board? Nor do I suggest that you continue clinging to Geographics, since it is a tool that will fall into disuse although it will continue to be functional in what it did (and does). Geographics does not allow simple things like complex geometries (parcels with holes), without you having to make cells or complex shapes and do spatial analysis with that "it's to cut your veins", and then it has limitations in handling transparencies or good printing taste.
Bentley Map solved things like that (and many more) but migrating from Geographics to Bentley Map has strong implications, as was one day moving from ArcView 3x to ArcGIS 9x.
Bentley Map can not be started with a simple user manual (unfortunately), because it is too geofumado. It takes specialized accompaniment to do fairly simple things (for the first time), such as building projects if a user never did it with Geographics. Additionally, finding staff that masters the tool (Bentley Map) is literally impossible in the countries we speak with ñ.
And in this, ArcGIS beats you in ease to do simple things (analysis, printing, reports, connection to databases, etc.). I'm not saying that you can't with Bentley Map, you can really do wonders, but doing things that you want to show in a short time ... takes up mastery of the tool.
And if you mean to build personal geodatabases or mxd-based projects, I really see that your best alternative is ArcGIS. Developing is equally complex in both tools but I see that is not your interest. It will be necessary to invest time and training of human resources in terms of data construction, because although there is much already, you do not have everything you do with a CAD program. Also, if you have Microstation licenses, it is not bad that you build complicated topologies in GNU and then the amounts to ArcMap while you find the tricks to construct vector data.
And finally, in terms of sustainability and profitable business, you're going to need to be able to find ArcGIS-friendly people, and that's a lot easier.
I think that it is appropriate to sell the technicians to where the business model is taking, to avoid disagreement with the change; they are the ones who make your company succeed and losing them ... hurts.

As you can see in the link, the environment of my company is the management of the territory (roughly). The point is that they have always been using Microstation as a CAD drawing tool (with all its advantages!) But the construction of a GIS project is a language that goes beyond the desire, time and profitability that can be obtained from when comparing it with an ArcGIS (in my opinion) ... but as you say, my fear is not the price of the software, it is not a problem (in fact the program is already available), the resource training has begun ... and we refuse to develop customized solutions (unless it is an extreme case ...).
My big question is if bentley map can compete at the level of creating projects with the ease of arcgis? since the current users know the Microstation environment, (but not at the level of creation of geographics projects, etc ... but at the user level) for which I think it can be more easily assimilated. More than anything, I would love to be able to address using bentley map in plugin with arcgis.
I hope that with this you can help me make a decision ... I will try to find a demo of Bentley Map anyway ...

It is difficult to give you such advice at a stroke without knowing the environment of your company. The same happens with other programs, users once used to working with a tool do not want to migrate to another and I suppose that being users of Microstation Geographics are very happy with the ease of CAD construction and management of attributes. Not so much for the use that is being given at the level of analysis, visualization or publication.
These things (which they love) can be done with ArcGis, but never with the ease that a CAD program offers, but it must be admitted that Geographics has its limitations as to the other GIS capabilities.
If I were to compare ArcGIS to Bentley Map… it depends on what you'll be using it for. If you tell us more about what your business is, in what area are your clients and where they are thinking to grow, since both solutions are robust and you must measure if your fear is simply prices for the software or the cost involved in forming a resource or developing solutions custom ... which in both cases you would have to invest whether you switch to ArcGIS or Bentley Map.
Hello, I would like to ask a question about Bentley Map (we have worked with MS Geographics, but of course to exploit it as gis it is not very operational, difficulty in setting up projects, knowing VBA to program ... and in the company we are beginning the move to ArcGIS, but workers are used to working with MS although we do few engineering projects, and we dedicate more, although little due to the difficulty, to the exploitation of the GIS. We want to use ArcGIS, but the workers are reluctant to change for the ease of drawing of MS…): What would your opinion be when comparing Bentley Map with ArcGIS? I have read the posts and watched demo videos… but I don't trust Bentley… is it easily operable for creation, update, geoprocessing… or how do you say, is it a real geofumed?
