Editing Objects with AutoCAD - Section 4

16.4 Select similar

A command very similar to the one of fast selection, and also very versatile, is the one that allows to select similar objects according to their properties. The procedure is based on choosing the property that will determine the similarity, such as the color or type of line used, then we must select an object from the drawing. All other objects that are similar to this one according to the criteria will also be selected.
To activate this option we must write in the command window “Selectsimilar”.

16.5 Object groups

As we have already mentioned, in all editing tasks it is always necessary to designate the objects that will be edited. In many cases it is also a matter of designating more than one object. In turn, as will be seen later, there are tasks that force us to choose a certain group of objects over and over again.
To save us the trouble of selecting specific sets of objects, Autocad allows us to group them under a certain name, so that we can select them by invoking the name or by clicking on an object that belongs to the group. To create a group of objects, we can use the “Group” button in the “Groups” section of the “Home” tab. In the options of this command we can indicate the objects that will belong to the group, define a name for it and even a description. We could also select certain objects and then press the same button, which will create an “unnamed” group, which is relatively true, since, as we will see later, it creates a generic name. Let's see.

The groups can be modified, of course. We can add or remove objects, we can also rename them. The button, of course, is called "Edit Group" and is located in the same section.

Ungrouping objects is equivalent to deleting the group, for this there is also a button on the ribbon. Obviously, all these tasks have no effect on the objects themselves.

As you have already noticed, by default, when you select an object that belongs to a group, all objects in the group are selected. If you want to individually select (and edit) an object belonging to a group, without selecting the others, then you can deactivate this feature. You can also deactivate the box that delimits objects in the group when they are selected.

All the previous tasks can also be carried out with the "Group Manager". It is a dialog that will also allow you to see the list of existing groups, so sooner or later you will have to resort to it if you have created several groups. As a good Administrator, it is also possible to create groups from the dialog box, writing the name in the corresponding text box, pressing the “New” button and indicating which objects will be part of the group. If we activate the "No name" box, then we will not be forced to write a name for the group, although in reality Autocad designates one automatically by putting an asterisk before it. These unnamed groups are also created when we copy an existing group. In any case, if we know that there are unnamed groups and we want to see them in the list, then we must also activate the “Include unnamed” box. For its part, we can use the “Find name” button in the dialog box, which will allow us to indicate an object and will return the names of the groups to which it belongs. Finally, at the bottom of the dialog box we see the group of buttons called “Change group”, which are generally used to manage the groups created. In fact, these buttons are activated when we choose a group from the list. Its functions are very simple and do not require us to expand on them.

As we have already seen, we can select a group of objects by clicking on one of its members. We could then activate one of the editing commands, such as Copy or Delete. But if we have already activated the command, then we can also type “G” in the command window when Autocad asks to select objects and then the name of the group, just like in the following Symmetry command sequence that we will study later.
